Estate Sale (4/18/14) - Savannah, UMC & Drinky Time

Stood in a light mist for the sale to start - then waited longer to check out than I did browsing the ENTIRE house! Of course I expected it since this particular company only has ONE person collecting money at their sales. I did walk away with a few books among other goodies and spent very little money.

Savannah Style, published in 1980 by the Junior League of Savannah (Inc.!). This is the 6th printing so I think although the copyright date is 1980 this book may only be a few years old as it's in pristine condition. Another great cookbook full of yummy Southern recipes. The previous owner did bookmark a few recipes: Scallops in Sherry, Rich Sherry Cream Cake and Apple Caramel Squares.

Savannah Seasons - Food and Stories from Elizabeth on 37th, published in 1996.  Recipes from the venerable Savannah restaurant founded in 1981. Lots of high end coastal cooking similar to dishes served at the restaurant. This book has only one bookmarked recipe - Crab Cakes.

Treasured Recipes, published in 1989 by Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church in Athens, Georgia. My first cookbook from this local church (I try and purchase every cookbook from churches in Athens, which I may stumble across). Church ladies always have the best recipes! According to the introduction, there were three previous cookbooks put out by the ladies of the church in 1917, 1941 and 1981. Would LOVE to find the 1917 edition.

Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender's Guide, published in 1968. AKA "The Bible of Booze". The first edition was published in 1935 and was recently published as late as 2005. I found a few drink recipes written on cards between the pages: Tom & Jerry, My Diane and Cranberry Tea.

Tea Temptations, published in 1996.  All about tea! Hints for sugars and syrups, plus information on English High Tea. Recipes for many teas, including a few with alcohol.

Even More Lee Bailey - Country Desserts & New Orleans

Lee Bailey's Country Desserts, published in 1988. This a former library copy, but in excellent condition and it's even signed! The photos are amazing as ever and the desserts are drool-worthy. I think it's time to step up my cake game and will definitely be testing  a few recipes.

Lee Bailey's New Orleans, published in 1993. The recipes come from a few of the Brennan family restaurants - Commander's Palace , Mr. B's and The Palace Cafe. New Orleans has always been a great city to eat (and drink). Having lived there,  I can say some of my best food memories are from the time I lived in/near the city.

Estate Sale Finds - Nashville Seasons & Atlanta Gas Light

Bought the following books at the same estate sale where I purchased the vintage cook booklets (only spent $3.00 for everything!)

Nashville Seasons, published in 1964. Recipes from the Junior League of Nashville, Tennessee. I also own a later edition of this book. Again, lots of yummy recipes as expected from a Junior League in the South. This book is from the era when women used their husband's name instead of their  (first) name when being attributed to a recipe.

Your Gas Range Cook Book, published in 1958. Cooking with gas promotional booklet sold by the Atlanta Gas Light Company. Besides the recipes, there are a few pages on the care and use of the gas range.

Last Week's Thrifty Buy Part II - Southern Junior League & Read It & Eat

The Southern Junior League Cookbook, published in 1977. The recipes were compiled from 29 Junior Leagues around the South. Over 300 years of Southern flavors, culture and cuisine are represented in the 700+ recipes.  I can't wait to try a few recipes!

Read It and Eat, published in 2005. A combination of reading and eating - two things I can get behind! Chapters feature both fiction and non-fiction readings selections and accompanying recipes that relate to each story. A few examples of the reading selection include Emma, Gone with the Wind,  Valley of the Dolls, The Princess Bride, The Turn of the Screw and the Odyssey.

Last Week's Thrifty Finds - Part I : Pawley's Island & Cabbage patch

Recipes from Pawley's Island, published in 1975. This the 14th edition with the 1st edition being printed in 1955. The recipes were collected by the Churchwomen of All Saints Waccamaw Episcopal Church in Pawley's Island, South Carolina. Lots of seafood recipes plus the usual Southern church picnic fare. The previous owner placed check mark beside several recipes and dog eared the page for the Broccoli salad recipe - a Southern staple at summer parties, picnics and even funerals.

Cabbage Patch - Famous Kentucky Recipes, published in 1956.  Recipes compiled by the Cabbage Patch Circle in Louisville,Kentucky. The Circle donated the proceeds from the sale of the book to the Cabbage Patch Settlement, a social service organization. Lots of great Southern favorites accompanied by sketches drawn by two members of the Circle.

Estate Sale - More Vintage Cook Booklets: Pillsbury Bake Off, Barcardi & Potato Chips

100 Bake-Off Recipes - Pillsbury, published in 1969. Recipes from the 20th annual Bake-Off. The winning entry that year was the Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs, made by wrapping a crescent roll around a marshmallow!

The winning entry!

Recipes and Party Ideas Starring Potato Chips, undated, but circa 1970's.  Published by the Potato Chip Institute (!!)  in Cleveland, Ohio and featuring Lay's products. In a majority of the recipes, chips are crushed and used as a topping or mixed into other ingredients.

Page from the Potato Chip Booklet :

The Bacardi Party, undated, but probably from the late 1970's ~ early 1980's.  Recipes for loads of rum based cocktails, daiquiris, exotic drinks, punches and hot-rum drinks. There are ideas for hors d'oeuvres (no rum involved) and a few entrees featuring rum i.e, adding a splash of rum to chili, fondue and kabobs. In the 70's I baked the infamous Barcardi Rum cake at least a dozen times!

Estate Sale - Vintage Cooking Booklets: The Chocolate Cookbook & The French Cookbook

Found several vintage cook booklets last Saturday at an estate sale. There were also a few hardcover books, but none that caught my eye. Both of the following are from the the Culinary Arts Institute series.

The French Cookbook, published in 1954. Over 141 world-renowned French recipes! There are appetizers to start followed by soups, eggs, main dishes, lots of sauce recipes and ending with desserts/candy. Each chapter name is also noted in French as well as the recipes. Most of the recipes really don't appear to be "French" except for the desserts.

Page from the French Cookbook:

The Chocolate Cookbook, published in 1954. There are 218 full-flavored chocolate recipes including cakes, cookies, pies, desserts candies and beverages.  The first couple of pages include useful tips when baking with chocolate.

More Yard Sale Purchases - James Beard & Texas A&M

Hullabaloo in the Kitchen II, published in 1998. Recipes complied by the Dallas County Texas A&M University Mother's Club. The first mother's club was founded in 1922 and there are now 120+ clubs in Texas and the the rest of the nation. Football is HUGE in Texas and competition is fierce among the ladies (and gents) so I expect nothing but the best recipes!

Beard on Bread, published in 1973.  Mr. Beard is the NAME in culinary circles (James Beard Foundation award) and I am totally giddy with excitement to try out a few recipes. Of course, I will work my way up to the yeast breads, by starting with a few easier recipes for batter breads, or maybe egg breads. Then there are the sweetened breads and coffee cakes! I LOVE fresh home baked bread and can remember making a few loaves with my mother while growing up.

Junior League - Lousiana Ya'll!

River Road Recipes - The Textbook of Louisiana Cuisine, published in 1997 (the original was published in 1959). This copy is the 71st (!!) printing which is fitting since this cookbook is  the all-time #1 best selling community cookbook series in the nation with over 1.9 MILLION books printed. Recipes complied by the Junior League of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I already own a much older version of the book, and this edition will be my "working" copy.

Feliciana Favorites, published in 1981. Not a Junior League book per se, but close since the recipes were complied the East Feliciana Pilgrimage and Garden Club of Clinton, Louisiana. Chock full of yummy Southern and Creole recipes. The money raised from the sale of the books was used to restore the Marston House. There is a really cool nameplate on the inside cover related to cooking that I am now hunting down to use on my own books!

The Australian Hertitage Cookbook

Instead of placing on my cookbook shelf - I may keep as a "coffee table" book! The book was given to the former owner as a memento of their holiday down under.

The Lodge was used as retreat for Champion's executives and ultimately divested to the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina in 2000. Lots of great Southern cooking recipes and yet another cookbook that embraces Southern Flour (soft-wheat)  AKA White Lily.

Lee Bailey - Cooking for Friends and Soup Meals

My Lee Bailey collection is close to being complete - I just need to find one or two more titles.

Cooking for Friends, published in 1992. Another awesome book with gorgeous photography and amazing recipes. I would cook for friends as well if they lived around the world! Some of the places and friends he visits are in Key West, Greece, Tuscany, Gascony and St. Barth's.

Soup Meals, published in 1989. Main soup meals for all occasions and celebrations. Beautiful photography throughout. Mr. Bailey's books are coffee table worthy.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Cooking, published in1972. Massive 927 page book by the editors of Favorite Recipes Press. All entries are listed alphabetically from Abalone to Zucchini. Edna Eby Heller's Dutch Cookbook (revised), published in 1980 (the first edition was printed in 1953).  I bought the book mainly for the bread and pie recipes.
