New Purchase - Mitford Cookbook

Jan Karon's Mitford Cookbook & Kitchen Reader, published in 2004. I am pretty sure I checked this out from the local library a few years back, in a serendipitous turn I actually bought this copy at the annual Friends of the Library sale bag sale (only 45 cents!) a few weeks back. This is NOT a library copy, but a donated "new" book. Filled with lots of yummy recipes plus quotes from characters in the Mitford series (I have NOT read any of the books).

New Purchase - Philly Cream Cheese

The Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese Cookbook, published in 1981. Cream cheese isn't just for frosting and cheesecakes! There are recipes for appetizers (natch), snacks and sandwiches, salads plus dressings, soups and entrees. Of course there are pages of recipes for cheesecakes, breads, pies and cookies. I adore the cover - so shiny!

- The Return! New Purchases - White House & California Sizzles

The White House Family Cookbook, published in 1987. My second cookbook with White House recipes , but not quite as old as my first - seen here: http://cocosvintagecookbookcollection.blogspot.com/2013/09/antique-cookbooks-1912-or-older.html

The book has two decades of recipes ( Lydon Johnson to the Reagans), plus lot of photos including a super cool picture of George Harrison chatting with President Ford (!!) and historical tidbits. The  chapters focus on each administration. I find it funny the Lyndon Johnson's favorite breakfast was chipped beef on toast (AKA shit on on a shingle for anyone who ever served in the military!), my dad ( a former Marine) often spoke of this monstrosity when we complained about what was being served for a meal. The Nixons favored beef and chicken for their entrees, while the Fords mixed it up a bit with a few Chinese recipes. As expected there are lots of Southern style recipes for the Carters and the Reagan's reflect the push towards the healthier eating movement of the 1980's.

California Sizzles, published in 1992. Recipes were compiled by the Junior League of Pasadena. This a fairly large book with over 300 pages of California inspired recipes.

Short Interlude

Taking a short interlude of a few days - I still have 5 entries to post. Need to re-group since my carefully placed Tetris tower of books came crashing to the ground (literally!!) this weekend. Dozens of books fell - barely missing my cat who was hanging out in the book room. Since I have surpassed my "original" goal of 500 books (by 300+ books!!), I am meticulously curating my collection and culling books to sell. I will return by the weekend!

New Purchases - Christmas in March

Bon Appetit - The Christmas Season, published in 2000.  Recipes for all manner of Christmas entertaining from cocktail parties, tree trimming, New Year's Eve and of course the BIG day.  Filled with gorgeous photos plus decorating tips and lots of helpful hints. LOVE the cover!

The Holiday Cook Book, published in 1950. This small book (60 pages) is chock full of great recipes for Christmas and the holiday season. I have already picked out a recipe to try - "Salad-in-a-bowl", the bowl is rubbed with garlic, the dressing made in the bowl and the greens tossed.

New Purchases - Florida Represent!

An American Celebration - Recipes and Traditions of Celebration, Florida, published in 2003.  Recipes were compiled from residents of the the town, plus a few from restaurants in the area.  Several  Florida political figures also submitted recipes along with a former president with strong ties to Florida. Watercolors depicting homes and scenes of the town are scattered throughout the pages. Most of the introductions to each chapter tout the "community" feel of the town and give off a Stepford  Wife-ish vibe.

Worth Tasting - A Culinary Tour Through the Architecture of the Palm Beaches, published in 2007. Another book I bought based on the cover (it also didn't hurt that it was part of a FOL bag sale and only ended costing 40 cents!). Recipes were collected by the Junior League of Palm Beach, Florida and reflect a coastal feel. There is a section on cocktails that features local seafood as well. The book is very elegant, printed on thick glossy stock and features photos of Palm Beach landmarks.

New Purchases - Family Receipts (Southern for Recipes!)

The Secret of the Tender Pie - America's Grandmothers Share Their Favorite Recipes, published in 1997.  A treasury of recipes from grandmothers all over the United States, most can be described as good old-fashioned comfort food. Each recipe is accompanied by a short bio and photo of the contributor. The book was given to the former owner Bubba, by Jon & Lauren in 1999.

To Love Honor & Cherish - A Compendium of Treasured Recipes, published in 1994 (?). The author compiled recipes from family and friends to create a wedding present for her son and daughter-in-law in 1994 and later self-published the book. According to a 2012 article, she has sold 350 out of 1,000 copies to family and friends. I was curious as as to how the book made it's way to Athens, Georgia which was quickly answered when I read the introduction. The author's father founded the Geography & Geology department at UGA!

New Purchases - Southern Charm

The Art of Dining in Memphis, published in 2005. The recipes in the book represent 29 restaurants in Memphis, Tennessee. The author is also an artist and each recipe is accompanied by a color illustration of the eatery. This is the first book in a series which include New Orleans, Nashville, Amelia Island and Memphis, Part 2.

Like a Summer Peach, published in 1996.  There are poems celebrating food (raspberries, sweet potatoes, peaches, etc.) nestled among venerable Southern recipes.

I Rode the Pink Pig - Atlanta's Favorite Tradition, published in 2004. The pink pig was a monorail ride for children set up during the Christmas season at the Rich's department store in downtown Atlanta from 1948 to 1991. The book celebrates the history of the ride, the Great Tree - another tradition was the lighting of the tree on Thanksgiving Day - plus a story about Priscilla (name of the pig) and reminiscences from people who rode Priscilla (and later Percival). The last section of the book is recipes from the Magnolia Room,  Rich's Bake Shops and the Rich's Cooking School (run by Nathalie Dupree). Sadly Rich's merged with Macy's and the name was dropped from the stores in 2005 in favor of the Macy's brand.
++Full disclosure - I worked at Rich's in Atlanta in the late 80's (and even own a plush Priscilla pig that was sold during the holidays) and then at Macy's for 5 years in my current town. I preferred my Rich's experience versus Macy's.++

Sometimes, if the price is right, I may buy a book based on the cover alone!

The National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center Cookbook, published in 1987. Recipes reflect the many countries and states the orchestra have visited in their travels. Printed on super glossy paper, the book is quite heavy for its size. It is also signed - but I am unable to decipher the signature.

New Purchases - Estate Sale Finds - Community Cookbooks

Bayou Cuisine: Its Tradition and Transition, (St. Stephen's Episcopal Church,Indianola Mississippi), published in 1979. The sticky note on the cover is a recipe for Cheesy corn muffins.  Very large cookbook that traces the the cultural influences of Delta cookery, from the Indians, Spanish, French and English, as well as Ante and Post Bellum periods. Scattered throughout are pictures of people and places from the region. I also found a letter from Alfred University (NY) requesting a $100.00 donation from the previous owner, an alumni of the school.

Recipe and Reminisce (Oconee County, GA Senior Center), published in 1980. Another large book loaded with recipes contributed by members of the center - some passed down through several generations. The reminiscence portion details the communities that make up Oconee County.
