May Thrifty Finds - Vintage Community Cookbooks and Karo Canning

Found these vintage cookbooks at a local thrift store - only 50 cents each!

Rho Sigma Cookbook, published in 1949. The recipes were compiled by the First United Presbyterian Church in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Lots of church lady recipes plus a handy dandy guide for can numbers often found in older cookbooks (i.e a No.1 can equals 1 1/2 cups). I found a recipe for a "Be My Valentine" Cake from Baker's Coconut tucked between the pages. The previous owner also wrote a recipes for pancake syrup on a blank page in the book.

Karo Finer Canned & Frozen Fruits, published in 1946. Tucked between the pages were cooperative extension booklets from 1974 on freezing fruits and vegetables dated 1974. Recipes for all types of canned fruit, jams, jellies and marmalades and of course pickles and relishes. Karo syrup is used as a sugar replacement and sometimes in conjunction with a smaller amount of sugar in the fruit recipes.

Our Favorite Recipes, published in 1957. Another book from Sharon, Pennsylvania - this one from the Hickory Township Women's Club. There are also lots of cool vintage ads from sponsors of the book.
