My Version of Black Friday (actually Saturday!)

Avoided the mall and other busy shopping areas and instead stopped by all the (open) thrift stores in town (8/9). Found a few more cookbooks, plus a few other things.

The New Hood Cook Book - A Modern Cook Book of Practical Recipes, published in 1941.  The book has 1195 modern recipes for all types of American food and was compiled by H.P. Hood & Sons Dairy Products. The book was a Christmas gift to the former owner in 1943. I found a vintage Kraft Marshmallow recipe booklet between the pages and a handwritten recipe card for Cocoa Fudge.

New Chinese Recipes - Using Only Ingredients Easily Obtainable in Neighborhood Sores, published in 1941. Recipes were adapted from Cantonese cooking done by Fred Wing.

from Williamsburg Kitchens, published in 1968. The recipes are a collection in the "Virginia" style and were gathered from local cookbooks, manuscripts and from the memories of the contributors.

Good as Gold - Centennial Olympic Games Cookbook, published in 1995. Recipes submitted by American chef and cooks to celebrate 100 modern years of the games.  Surprising there are NO photos of any finished dish. The 1996 Olympics were held in Atlanta for most of the more popular sports, but here in Athens we  hosted a few soccer games and rhythm gymnastics.

Southern Sideboards, published in 1992. Compiled by the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi, the first printing was in 1978. There are 400 pages of great southern recipes, cooking basics and special techniques.

I Like You - Hospitality Under the Influence, published in 2006. LOTS of recipes, plus AMY SEDARIS! Her brother David, is one of my favorite essayists - would love to be a guest at the family holiday dinners.....

Another Completed Set!! The Southern Heritage Cookbook Collection

It didn't take long! Found the last three books to complete my Southern Heritage Cookbook collection. There was also an Index guide, but I passed on purchasing. The former owner donated her ENTIRE collection to GW, I got there early Sunday morning and bought my three books before the crowds came in to shop.

Sporting Scene Cookbook, published in 1985. Recipes and menus for various sporting activities including equestrian events, hunting, fishing and "on the green" (football, tennis and golf).

Gift Receipts Cookbook, published in 1985.  Recipes for Christmas gift giving - includes preserves, pickles, candy and of course sweets!

Sea and Stream Cookbook, published in 1984.  Recipes for all manner of seafood from bass to tuna and shellfish!

Weekend Round Up - New Vintage Purchases

The last of the books I purchased this week. Only thrifted two days this week since I have company this weekend. I spent two days super cleaning the house! While cleaning the "book" room with D, he suggested I may need to consider cutting back on the books I buy (the horror!). In addition to my cookbook collection, I also buy various other books - mostly art and vintage decorating. It may be time to cull through my titles yet again! Of course I didn't  tell him about my recent on-line purchase of 40+ vintage cooking pamphlets...

Better Homes & Gardens Chicken and Turkey Cookbook, published in 1976. Another book for my BH&G collection! Just in time for the holidays, the book has 215 different ways to prepare pheasant, duck and other game birds.

Craig Claiborne's Southern Cooking, published in 1987. Mr. Claiborne was born and raised in Mississippi and the 300 recipes are from his mother, his own files and some the regions best cooks.

New Purchases - Weekend Thrifty

Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen, published in 1984. It is the first cookbook written by Mr. Prudhomme (trivia - his given name is Gene Autry Prudhomme, but was given the name Paul by a priest on his birth certificate since it is/was tradition for Catholics to have a saint name). Paul is credited with popularizing Cajun cuisine.

The Louisiana Proud Collection of Home Cooking, published in 1991. Recipes were obtained by mail, phone or in person - people were asked to submit ONE recipe for something that they cooked for the family. Recipes represent all geographical sections and parishes of the state. My college town has a  recipe for a Seafood Casserole and the recipe my dad's hometown is a Strawberry Torte - which is appropriate since it is also home to the Strawberry Festival.

Vintage Cookbooks - From Mom's House to Mine

My mom cut back on cooking a few years back, so I snagged a few cookbooks from her collection.

La Cochina de los Vela, published in 1984. Printed for the Velas family reunion held in Hildago County, Texas. The book was a gift to my mom from a former neighbor in Spain who retired in her home state of Texas.

Band Booster Makings, no publication date. Recipes compiled by the band boosters of Ponchatoula High School in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. My dad grew up and attended school in Ponchatoula (his family still resides there) and I attended college In Hammond - a few  miles down the road.

Our Golden Anniversary Favorite Recipes, published in 1980. Recipes compiled by the Maui Extension Homemaker's Council. Book was given to my mom by long time family friends from Wake Island and later Hawaii. They retired in Maui.

The Second Plantation Village Cookbook, published in 1996 (first printing date was 1987). Hometown cookbook! "Hawaii's Plantation Village is an outdoor museum that tells the story of life on Hawaii's Sugar Plantations (circa 1850-1950).  The Village includes restored buildings and replicas of plantation structures such as houses of various ethnic groups, community buildings such as the plantation store, infirmary, community bathhouse, and manager's office. We share the story of Hawaii's various cultures, including Hawaiian, Chinese, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Japanese, Korean, and Filipino."  The village and nearby park were built after I left for college.

The Wake Island Cookbook, published in 1966. Compiled by the Wake Island Women's Club. For me, this book is the most special in my entire collection. I learned to bake from this book, read the recipes over and over countless time while growing up and still make a yummy carrot cake from a recipe found within the pages.
