More Catching Up with Thrifty Finds - Carnival Cruises, Hershey's and Back of the Box

Carnival Creations - Cruise Cuisine from Carnival Chefs, published in 1996. The book is signed by several of the waiters and staff who assisted the previous owner. Recipes include appetizers, soups and salads, entrees, desserts and spa food. Everyone I know who ever went a cruise ALWAYS mentions the abundance of great food!

Hershey's 100th Anniversary, published in 1994. I have yet to unwrap the book - there were at least 2 copies of the same book at the thrift store - both still factory sealed. I think I paid 50 cents for the book (sight unseen as it were!) at my favorite local thrift store. Looks to filled with lots of yummy CHOCOLATE desserts.

Best Recipes of the Great Food Companies, published in 1992. I try and pick up these "back of the box" books whenever I spot one for a great price. I love to experiment with recipes on the back of products and tweak it to suit my tastes. There are almost 500 pages of recipes!

Catching Up with My Thrifty Finds - Nathalie Dupree, The Lady & Sons and Italian by Celebrities

Salute to Italy - Celebrity Cookbook, published in 1984. The book was published by JC Penney and contains recipes by movie stars, sports and political figures, cooking professionals (i.e. chefs) and a few fashion notables. There are recipes contributed by Mario Andretti, Perry Como, Governor Cuomo, Dom DeLuise, Lee Iacocca, Sophia Loren, Martin Scorsese and Fancesco Scavullo.

Nathalie Dupree's Matters of Taste, published in 1990. There are 27 menus and the recipes were featured on Nathalie's television show of the same name. According to a TV Guide entry, only 26 shows aired. Not sure if a couple of the menus were combined or one menu never made it to the air.

The Lady & Sons - Just Desserts, published in 2002. I think it is the last cookbook published before Paula started her Food Network show. Besides the missing TV logo now found on all her other books, there are only two other books noted as being written (both of which I own). Filled with 120 sweet treats from her Savannah restaurant.

Estate Sale Find - Vintage The Good Housekeeping Cook Book

The Good Housekeeping Cook Book, published in 1946. I own several editions of this book, all published in different years. This copy is the 7th edition and contains over 900 pages jam packed with recipes and useful information. There are chapters on meal planning, food stretchers and alternatives and most interestingly - the Business Housekeeper. This edition is probably the first post-war revision and reflects the changing role of women in the household. Many women did not return to their role of  homemaker after the war ended and this new chapter addresses the problems of preparing dinner without delay when working women returned home from their job.

Last Week's Yard Sale Finds - Community Cookbooks

I find it hard to pass up local community cookbooks especially when are are priced at 50 cents each!

Cooking with the Golden Heirs, published in 1997. Recipes complied by the Golden Heirs Senior Citizens of Commerce, Georgia which consists of members from 4 area churches. Chock full of favorite recipes from seasoned cooks.

Food Fit for a King - Tasty Recipes from The Hungry Lions of Georgia District 18D, published in 1998. The district covers 47 counties and 68 clubs, stretching from Savannah to Florida along the coast and inland to Statesboro.

Recipes and Reminiscences of New Orleans, published in 1971. The recipes were compiled by the Ursuline Academy Alumnae Association. The Academy is the oldest Catholic school in the United States,  founded in 1727. Lots of great New Orleans recipes! I had a suite mate in college who graduated from the Academy and being a former Catholic school kid myself, found it amusing that her parents sent her to college to find a husband! She wasn't that bright but very sweet!

Recipes Used-Approved and Recommended To You, published in 1965. The Order of the Eastern Star of Athens (Georgia) compiled the recipes found in the book. From the title I am assuming only the best recipes made the cut!

Estate Sale Find - Woman's Alliance Cookbook - Merrill, Wisconsin

Woman's Alliance Cookbook, the first few pages are missing, but I believe the book dates from 1924. Maybe a fore-runner to the Junior League (?) I was unable to find any information on the group. A community cookbook with the contributors names listed by each recipe. There are blank spaces between chapters to write favorite recipes (which the previous owner has done) and lots of great ads.

Yard Sale Time - Vintage Cooking Pamphlets Part II

How To Get the Most Out of Your Sunbeam Mixmaster, published in 1960.  Booklet that accompanied the Mixmaster with hints, tips and recipes. This model came with a mix-finder dial, beater ejector and a juice extractor (!!).

Joys of Jello, no publication date - but appears to be circa the early 1960's. My mom had this book when I was growing up. I used to read the recipes and was mesmerized by the photos! I even made one or two dishes for my family.

The Hallmark Outdoor Cooking Guide, undated but probably from the late 60's ~ early 70's. I guess you gave this booklet in lieu of a Father's Day card. Lots of cute vintage illustrations.

The White Lily Cooking Guide, published in 1934. "The Finest Flour Money Can Buy", White Lily is THE preferred flour of Southern bakers. Scattered among the recipes for baked goods, there are a few chapters devoted to meats, salads and vegetables. A handwritten recipe for Frozen Chocolate Chip Dessert Cake was tucked between the pages by the previous owner.

Betty Crocker's Bisquick Party Book, published in 1957. With only 24 pages, the booklet has 97 new ideas and recipes.

New Purchases - Christmas Baking & Cooking

Christmas with Southern Living, 2001. How yummy does the cake on the cover look? Besides the usual holiday confections, there are menus for all manner of holiday entertaining. Plus decorating ideas and a chapter on homemade gifts. My most requested holiday "cookie" came from a Southern Living cookbook (97 or 98 edition) - the buckeye ( chocolate covered peanut butter ball).

Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Cooking From the Heart, published in 2008. Loaded with lots of great recipes for entrees, appetizers and of course sweets (many, many sweets!). Filled with scrumptious  photos. The previous owner left a partial shopping list between the pages - for an eggnog punch!

Many of the recipes come from the Fitness House Dining Room which was open to employees of Rodale Press in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Rodale Press began publishing in 1942 with Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, which is still available today as Organic Gardening. Thrifty Finds - Community Cookbooks: As You Like It and St. Alban's

As You Like It, published in 1959 by the Seton Guild of St. Ann's Infant and Maternity Home in Washington, D.C. The home was founded prior to 1860 and in 1861 began an education and job-training program for single mothers to become the family breadwinner. In 1949 the home began offering affordable childcare for working mothers. The Home moved to its current location in Avondale, Maryland in 1962 and is still operating. Recipes were contributed by Guild members, celebrities, various Embassies in the D.C. area, restaurants and politicians' wives.

St. Alban's Cook Book, published in 1957. Recipes were compiled by the Rector's Aid of St. Alban's Church in Washington, D.C. (Both books were donated to the same thrift store - along with many others I purchased, by the same woman). Filled with great recipes from church ladies! I usually find two or three new recipes in church cookbooks to add to my menu rotation!
