TV Show Cookbooks Part I

Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook, published in 1991. Heavy on Southern cooking with quotes, photos and information on the show's characters. Not a vintage book, but interesting none the less.

Alice's Brady Bunch Cookbook, published in 1994. Lots of backstage stories and photos. And yes, there is a recipe for Bogie's Pork Chops and Applesauce. Also not vintage.

The Nancy Drew Cookbook - Clues to Good Cooking, published in 1973. The book size and format mimic the Nancy Drew series.

Someone's in the Kitchen with Dinah- Dinah Shore's Personal Cookbook, published in 1972.  The book also contains many of her TV programs most requested recipes, including Frank Sinatra's recipe for Fresh Tomato Spaghetti Sauce.

The Mike Douglas Cookbook - Recipes Made Famous on the Mike Douglas Television Show, published in 1969. I used to watch Mike Douglas after school while growing up and still make a Shepherd's Pie dish from a recipe that Marie Osmond demonstrated on the show.

Cocktail Cookbooks

The Art of Drinking - What and How, published in 1930.  In addition to the drink recipes, there are also  appetizer recipes for each cocktail. The recipe for the Archbishop (Bacardi, sherry and lemon juice garnished with a pickled onion) is the only dog eared and soiled page in the book.

Bartender's Guide by Trader Vic, published in 1947. Jam packed with 1,500 recipes by Trader Vic who is credited with being the founder one of the first successful themed chains.

International Cocktail Specialties from Madison Avenue to Malaya, published in 1962. Also includes canape recipes from around the world.

Cookbooks from the 1940's Part III

America Cooks - Favorite Recipes from the 48 States, published in 1949. Over 1600 recipes and 942 pages.

The Good Housekeeping Cookbook, published in 1949. I own several edition of this cookbook.

How I Cook It by Virginia McDonald, published in 1949. Mrs. McDonald ran a successful tea room - The McDonald Tea Room in Gallatin, Missouri.

Cookbooks from the 1940's Part II

The Good Housekeeping Cookbook, published in 1944. Over 900 pages packed tested, useful information - blurb on front facing page.

Woman's Home Companion Cook Book, published in 1946. Another hefty book with 894 pages including a few photos in both B&W and color.

The Gayelord Hauser Cookbook, published in 1946. Mr. Hauser  promoted the natural way of eating and there is a section juicing for both fruits and vegetables.

Let's Cook It Right - Good Health Comes From Good Cooking, published in 1947.

The United States Regional Cookbook, published in 1947. Earlier editions were published in 1939 & 1940.
The recipe for Kentucky Burgoo (makes 1200 gallons) calls for a TON of potatoes, peeled & diced plus one dozen squirrels for each 100 gallon.

Ida Bailey Allen's Cookbook - Delicious Meals at a Low Cost, published in 1948. Tiny book - about the size of a paperback, but with a hard cover.

Cookbook from the 1940's Part I

Ida Bailey Allen's Time Saving Cook Book, published in 1940. Yet another book by Mrs Allen!

New Orleans Cook Book by Lena Richard, published in 1940. Lena did a book tour to promote her book and the previous owner had it signed.

The Settlement Cookbook - The Way to a Man's Heart, published in 1940. This copy is the 23rd edition (enlarged & revised). The first edition was published in 1901.

Southern Cooking by Mrs. S.R. Dull, published in 1941. The first edition, published in 1928 is still defined by current culinary connoisseurs as the Bible of southern cooking.

June Platt's Dessert Cookbook, published in 1942.

The American Woman's Cookbook, published in 1942. Originally published in 1938 from the Delineator Cook Book.

The Lilly Wallace New American Cookbook, published in 1943. The first edition was published in 1941.

The Modern Family Cookbook by Meta Givens, published in 1941. This book is huge, with 905 pages of recipes with tabbed sections.

Cookbooks from the 1930's Part II

The Country Cookbook, published in 1937.A Countryman Press book, other books in the series include: The Country Dance Book, The Country Craft Book and the Country Rod and Gun Book.

The Household Searchlight Homemaking Guide, published in 1937 by the Household Magazine of  Topeka, Kansas. In addition to recipes and menus for all occasions,  there are chapters on etiquette, childcare, health & beauty and decorating.

Rumford Complete Cookbook - Revised, published in 1939. Rumford was a manufacturer of baking powder, starting in 1869.

Mary Hunt's Salad Bowl, published in 1939. Contains a recipe for Perfection Salad, a recipe that still appears today in many church/community cookbooks. A congealed salad, it incorporates gelatin with cabbage, celery and pimentos.

Cookbooks from the 1930's Part I

Lorain Cooking, copyright 1930 by the American Stove Company. Priced at One Dollar, the first edition was printed in 1924.

Meals, Tested Tasted & Approved - Favorite Recipes and Menus from Our Kitchens to Yours, published in 1932 by the Good Housekeeping Institute. This copy is the fifth edition, the first edition was published in 1930.

All About Home Baking, published in 1933 by the General Foods Company. I owned another copy which was in rough shape, when I acquired this copy which is in excellent condition, I sold the other copy.

Round-the World Cookbook, published in  1934, by Ida Baily Allen. According to Wikipedia: Ida Cogswell Bailey Allen, (1885–1973) once popularly known as "The Nation's Homemaker" was the author of over 50 cookbooks. She was described as "The original domestic goddess" by antique cookbook experts Patricia Edwards and Peter Peckham.

Modern Meal Planner - 1115 Menus-744 Recipes, published in 1935 by the Sperry Flour Company. It contains recipes for every meal in the year. Recipes are printed on both sides of the pages and the book is flipped mid-way through the year.

Magic Chef Cooking, printed in  1937 by the American Stove Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Price on title page is $1.00. This copy is the 15th edition, the first edition was published in 1924.

The Boston Cooking School Cookbook, published in 1937. The original edition was published in 1896 (another wish list book). The author, Fannie Farmer, introduced the concept of using standardized measuring spoons and cups,as well as level measurement.

For years this was the oldest cookbook I owned, until I really serioulsy began collecting cookbooks.

Cookbooks from the 1920's

Any One Can Bake, published in 1927 by the Royal Baking Powder Company. It is embossed with a price of $2.00, which I find quite high for that era. Using the CPI Inflation calculator, it would sell today for $26.85!

The Art of Cooking and Serving, published in 1927 by Proctor & Gamble. Not to worry if you have no servants,  there's a chapter on "Table Service in the Servantless House"!

The Modern Priscilla Cookbook, published in 1929. Given away for FREE at a neighbor's yard sale this summer.

Good Meals and How to Prepare Them, a Guide to Meal Planning, Cooking and Serving, published in 1929 by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Antique Cookbooks - 1912 or older

The following books were published prior to 1912.

Found 365 Vegetable Dishes at the EPIC estate sale (see previous entry), published in 1910.

Lowney's  Cookbook Revised Edition was published in 1912 (first edition was published in 1907).

The White House Cookbook has a publication date of 1912, the first edition was published in  1887 (this book is on my wish list). I bought the book off the "big" auction site for a really low price and the seller included all the vintage ephemera the previous owner had stuffed between the pages.

The Chicago Record Cookbook

Changing tactics, instead of showcasing my favorite cookbooks, going forward I will be posting photos of my ENTIRE collection in chronological order for most books. I am sure a few entries will be out of sequence since I am still adding to my collection.

Other entries will showcase "collections" or series of books, i.e. all books by Betty Crocker, BH& Gardens, Southern Living, etc. or by theme.

Shown below is the oldest cookbook in my collection - The Chicago Record Cookbook, with a publication date of 1896. I purchased the book at an estate sale in August, 2013 with 30+ other books for the low price of $10.00 for the entire lot!
