Cookbooks from the 1950's Part I

The Art of Italian Cooking, published in 1955. Recipes for 200+  recipes, in the real Italian manner.

The Ford Treasury of Favorite Recipes from  Famous Eating Places, published in 1950. Printed by the Ford Motor Company, the first edition was printed in 1946.

Culinary Arts Institute Encyclopedic Cookbook, published in 1950. Another massive book with 974 pages.

Ann Pillsbury's Baking Book, published in 1951.

The Art of Serving Food Attractively, published in 1951. More of a garnish instructional manual than a cookbook.

The Joy of Cooking, published in 1952. Joy is one the most published cookbooks in the United States, and has been in print continuously since 1936 and with more than 18 million copies sold.The first edition was privately published in 1931 and sells for $3-5,000 (!!). My humble copy is a reprint of the 1951 edition with error corrections - because of the time taken by the protracted legal battles, final editing of the 1951 edition was hastily done.

The Family Circle Cake & Cooky Cookbook, published in 1953.

Early American Recipes - Traditional Recipes from New England Kitchens, published in 1953. The book has lots of cute illustrations by Barbara Corrigan. The original box the book came with is in pretty good condition for being 60 years old.

Vintage Cookbooks from Hawaii

The Hilo Woman's Club Cook Book - Hawaiian Recipes, published in 1953. This copy is the 7th printing, with the 1st printing published in 1937.

Mai Kai Polynesian & Chinese Cook Book - The Very Best Exotic Foods for the Gourmet, published in 1963 by the Mai Kai Trading Company.

Lucky Luck's Hawaiian Gourmet Cookbook, published in 1971.  Lucky had a radio show in Hawaii, also a TV show, owned a tiki bar and even recorded a few albums of Hawaiian music.

Friends of Iolani Palace Cook Book, published in 1987.  The original "Hawaii Five-O" TV series depicted Iolani Palace as the police headquarters.

Vintage Lousiana Cookbooks

New Orleans Recipes by Mary More Bremer, published in 1932.Lots of great Creole recipes.

River Road Recipes published by The Junior League of Baton Rouge in 1965. River Road Recipes is the nation's #1 best-selling community cookbook series, this copy is from the 9th printing, the first printing was in 1959.

Tony Chachere's Cajun Country Cookbook, published in 1972. I keep a can of Tony C's Creole Seasoning in my spice rack for everyday use.

Y.W.C.O. Cookbook - Athens, GA - 1951-1976. Book is the 2nd edition.

Bon Voyage, Sail on Clarke County Recipes. No publication date or any info on the group publishing the book.

A Classic Christmas - An Entertaining and Decorating Guide for the Holidays, published in 1986 by The American Cancer Society Auxiliary of Athens, GA.  This is the 3rd printing, with first printing published in 1984.

Athens GA Cookbooks Part I

Living in Athens I have a special interest in local community and church cookbooks from Athens as well as the surrounding counties.

A Cook's Tour of Athens published in 1963 by the Junior Assembly of Athens, GA. The first edition of a popular local cookbook.

A Cook's Tour of Athens, published in 1967 by the Junior Assembly of Athens, GA. This the revised edition and was a gift to the previous owner by her daughter as a memento of her first visit to Athens in September, 1968.

A Cook's Tour of Athens, published in 1969 by the Junior Assembly of Athens, GA. Fourth printing of the 1967 edition.

Gems from Georgia's Kitchens, published in 1967 by the Garden Club of Georgia. This is the second edition, with the first being published in 1963.

Christmas Gems for Holiday Entertaining, published in 1984 by the Garden Club of Georgia.\

In addition to its world renown music scene, Athens is also the home to the University of Georgia. Here are a few cookbooks with UGA ties. So far I have yet to stumble across a cookbook written by a local musician.

UGA Bicentennial Cookbook, published in 1984 by the College of Home Economics of UGA.

A Cook's Holiday - recipes from UGA Tate Center Catering, published in 1996 (?). Started in December of 1986, A Cook's Holiday is an annual four day series of luncheons prepared by the University Food Services for faculty & staff showcasing the culinary talents of the Catering Department. I attended one or two luncheons while employed by UGA in the late 1980's.

Farm Journal Coobooks

Farm Journal's Country Cookbook - Popular Cookbook, published in 1959. Collection of popular recipes from the Farmer's Wife section of the Farm Journal.

Farm Journal's Country Cookbook - Special Edition - More Than 1,00 Tested Recipes, published in 1959. Introduction pages are the same as the Popular Edition.

Farm Journal Complete Pie Cookbook, published in 1965. Contains 700 dessert and main dish pies recipes.

Farm Journal Family Favorites from Country Kitchens, published in 1973. The book was a birthday gift in 1973 to "mom from Joe & Sandi" per inscription in book.

Freezing & Canning Cookbook - Prized Recipes for the Farms of America, published in 1964 by Farm Journal.

Homemade Bread by the Food Editors of Farm Journal, published in 1969. I have owned this book since the mid 1980's when I purchased it via the Cookbook Book Club.

Vintage Regional Cookbooks - Hardback

Fascinating Foods from the Deep South, published in 1963. The book appears to have rarely used by the previous owner, with the exception of one recipe - Chicken Divan - the page is noted by a Post It.

New Southern Cooking by Nathalie Dupree, published in 1986. Nathalie is best known for starting the New Southern Cooking movement and many of her former students from the Rich's Cooking School in Atlanta  have gone on to careers in restaurants, cooking publishing, and food media.

Hawaii Cookbook and Backyard Luau, published in 1967. I grew up in Hawaii and buy most of the cookbooks (both vintage and newer) from Hawaii that I come across while thrifting.

Vintage State Fair Cookbooks

Blue Ribbon Recipes - County Fair Winners, published in 1968. This book was once belonged to the Timm Chiropractic Clinic per several stamped pages.

The State Fair Blue Ribbon Cookbook, Recipes by America's Foremost State Fair Prize Winner, published in 1976. All the recipes are from Opal's personal collection. Opal Hayes entered the Illinois State Fair for over 45 years. She won more than 2,000 Blue Ribbons, 42 trophies, 16 Purple Rosette Sweepstakes Ribbons and was judged "Cook of Today" ten times. In 1955 - her most successful year - 115 of the 130 entries she submitted won Blue Ribbons.

Vintage Restaurant Cookbooks

Look No Further - A Cookbook of Favorite Recipes from Boone Tavern Hotel, Berea College, Kentucky, published in 1955.

The New Orleans Restaurant Cookbook, published in 1967. Includes recipes from Brennan's, Antoine's, Galatoire's and other popular New Orleans restaurants. Some of my favorite food memories are from the years I lived in New Orleans which I consider one of the best places to eat! A few of my personal favorites are the soft shell crab or oyster po-boy from Cafe Maspero's, a broiled seafood platter from a restaurant that I can no longer recall the name, boiled crawfish from Deenie's in Bucktown and the gumbo from Ralph & Kacoo's.

Trader Vic's Pacific Island Cookbook with Side trips to Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, Mexico and Texas published in 1968. There are 100's of recipes for food and drinks from 18 different places.

TV Show Cookbooks Part II

The Graham Kerr Cookbook by the Galloping Gourmet, published in 1969. Instructional photos accompany the recipes. I also remember watching the Galloping Gourmet on TV while growing up.

The Galloping Gourmet Volume 4 Television Cookbook, published in 1970.

Star Trek Cookbook - The official cookbook from Star Trek's First Chef - An Exploration of Star Trek Cuisine for the Earthbound, published in 1999. Also contains information on the show's characters and other trivia. Not vintage but  an entertaining read.
