The oldest cookbook in my collection (as of this post) -
"Lowney's Cook Book", first published in 1907, this is the revised
edition with a copyright date of 1912. The edition is illustrated with several color
plates of various meat cuts and desserts. I purchased the book at an estate
sale of a prominent local family a few years ago.
Besides collecting cookbooks for recipes, they are also a
great history resource and a time line for the changing role of women in
society. The above receipt for Roast Chicken includes instructions for plucking
and dressing a chicken.
Also included are receipts on cooking for the sick and convalescent.
Most are broths, teas and flavored water.
